The School of Materials Science and Engineering was established in the year of 2004, which predecessor was the Department of Mechanical Manufacturing structured in 1959. After the development of nearly 50 years, the school have formed an integral system included excellent faculty and the relevant experiment and research appliance. A great many number of advanced trained personnel have been positioned in railway equipment industry, domestic economic development and social progress. The school is the council chairman institution of Liaoning provincial welding society. The two undergraduate specialties including metallic materials and heat treatment, welding technology and appliance are the key subjects of the ministry of railways during the eighth-five and ninth-five planned years
There are six undergraduate specialties, including Materials Forming and Control Engineering, Metallic Materials Engineering, Welding Technology and Appliance, Inorganic nonmetallic Materials Engineering, Materials Physics and Electronic Science and Technology(Electronic Materials),two master disciplines which are Materials science and materials processing engineering respectively. Since 1978, the graduate was enrolled. In 2000, the doctoral discipline, namely materials processing engineering was established. In 2007, granted by Ministry of Personnel, first level discipline postdoctoral research station, Materials Science and Engineering, was established.
There are 93 registered faculty and staff in the school, among which 88 members are full time, five professors are part-time. Among 88 full-time members, there are 22 full professors and 15 associate professors, and 11 of the faculty are doctoral tutors. One member was titled the national outstanding achievement specialist, five members were awarded by the special government allowance, four members were titled the provincial and ministerial level outstanding achievement specialists, etc. Materials Science and Materials Science and Engineering were evaluated as the Key Disciplines of Liaoning Province.
